Which is great, because it is a sort of urban oasis where you can get anything you need, including the company of other decent people, while also having immediate access to some incredible outdoors. The Deschutes River runs through the middle of town, alongside several brewpubs including the legendary Deschutes Brewery, as well as concert venues and art galleries. Just a stones throw away there are several national and state parks, national forests, volcanic monuments, you name it, right outside of town.
In fact, we drove 10 minutes from downtown into Deschutes National Forest, drove another 10 minutes on forest fire roads, and found a prime backcountry camp site on the edge of a bluff over Tumalo Creek. While staying there we were treated to some light thunderstorm action and a rainbow.
We left Bend the next morning, and didn't see any real civilization until Klamath Falls almost 3 hours later. Our original plan was to stop and camp in the backcountry near Shasta, but by the time we got there we were feeling strong enough to push all the way home. We'll save Shasta for another trip!
